Quick disclosure before anything else: I build SEO Chrome extensions myself, Scoped SEO is mine. So yes, it appears on this list, and yes, I’m biased about it. But that’s also exactly why my take on the others is worth your time. I’ve pulled apart basically every SEO extension on the Chrome Web Store while building my own, I know which ones are genuinely lightweight and which ones are 5 MB of tracking code with an SEO feature bolted on.

What Happened to SEO Minion?

SEO Minion was the free multi-tool everyone had pinned. On-page analysis, broken link checking, People Also Ask export, SERP preview, location simulator, all free. Then in June 2023 it merged into the Keywords Everywhere subscription and the free ride ended. If you open it today without a paid plan, you hit a wall.

I’m not going to trash them for charging, tools cost money to maintain and I say that as someone who maintains one. But the pricing bundles Minion with Keywords Everywhere credits, so you’re paying for a package even if you only ever wanted the PAA export. And the Chrome Web Store reviews since the change tell you how the average user feels about it, the rating has dropped hard from its glory days.

The good news: in 2026 you can replace every single SEO Minion feature with free tools. Not “free trial” free. Actually free.

How I Tested These

Nothing fancy, but worth stating. Each extension ran in my daily workflow for at least a week on this site and my other projects: real audits, real SERP checks, real content work. I watched three things: what it actually does for free, how much it slows the browser, and what happens to your data. Extensions that exist mainly to funnel you into a subscription got judged on their free value only.

Mine, as disclosed. I built Scoped SEO because I got tired of extensions that either paywall basics or take five seconds to load a panel of data I didn’t ask for. It does fast on-page checks right in the browser, the stuff you actually look at daily: titles, metas, headings, links, indexability. No login, no account, and it doesn’t phone home to some SaaS trying to upsell you.

BTW, my favorite features in this extension are speed metrics, tech stack checker, and GEO/AEO tabs.

Being newer, it obviously doesn’t have the install base of the veterans below, and it stays in its lane, on-page only, so you won’t get backlink or volume data from it. If you only install one tool from this list besides mine, make it this one.

Detailed is free, fast, and sits at one of the highest ratings of any SEO extension on the store, which it earns the boring way, by not gating anything behind a login. One click gives you the page’s headings, links, schema, hreflang, and social tags.

But here’s the thing ex-Minion users need to know, and almost nobody does: the killer feature is hidden. Go into the extension’s settings and enable multi-level People Also Ask expansion. That replicates the nested PAA clicking workflow people are currently paying SEO Minion for. Free, just switched off by default. I have no idea why they bury it.

Small gripe after months of use: the robots.txt and sitemap shortcuts guess at where those files live, so on sites with non-standard setups they land on 404s. You learn to ignore those two buttons.

The veteran of this list, and the most data-dense free option there is. SEOquake overlays metrics directly onto the search results page, runs on-page audits, breaks down internal versus external links, even does keyword density if you still care about that.

My honest usage pattern: I keep it disabled by default. The SERP overlay turns every casual Google search into a spreadsheet, which is exhausting. But when I sit down for a proper SERP analysis session, like the two minute checks I described in my Query Deserves Diversity and QDF articles, I toggle it on and it’s brilliant. Treat its traffic estimates as directional though, they’re estimates.

Minion’s SERP preview feature, rebuilt as a free standalone. Paste your title and meta description, see exactly how they render in Google.

What makes it better than the character counters in most SEO plugins: it truncates by pixel width, not character count. Character limits lie. A title full of W’s and M’s gets cut way earlier than one full of i’s and l’s, and this tool shows you the truth. I run every title on this site through it, including this article’s. It does exactly one job, and nothing else, which is precisely why I trust it.

SERP Simulator by Semalt

5. SEO Search Simulator by Nightwatch

Best for: Location-based rank checking | Rating: ⭐ 4.8 (2.9k ratings) | Price: Free | Chrome Web Store

This replaces Minion’s location simulator, and I haven’t found a better free version anywhere.

You emulate a Google search from any city or country and check whether a URL ranks in the top 100 there, without your own search history and location polluting the results. If you do local SEO or serve multiple countries, that’s essential. Even if you don’t, seeing your rankings the way a searcher in New York or London sees them is a reality check worth having, your personalized bubble flatters you.

It’s a spot-check tool, one query at a time, so don’t expect a rank tracker. And Google throws captchas at you if you hammer it too fast. For what it is, though, no complaints.

6. SEO Meta in 1 Click

Best for: Instant meta tag inspection | Rating: ⭐ [check listing] | Price: Free | Chrome Web Store

Exactly what the name promises. Click the icon, see every meta tag, the heading structure, image alt status, and Open Graph tags in one panel. No configuration, no login, no waiting.

Yes, its features overlap with Detailed and Scoped SEO. I keep it installed anyway, because sometimes you want to glance at your watch, not open a calendar app. It shows you what’s on the page and stops there, no recommendations, no SERP features, no link data. For the five-second sanity check, that restraint is the feature.

7. MozBar (with a caveat)

Best for: Moz DA/PA metrics | Rating: ⭐ 3.3 (2.5k ratings) | Price: Freemium | Chrome Web Store

I almost left MozBar off this list, and the reason I kept it is that sometimes you genuinely need Moz’s DA and PA metrics, for link prospecting or because a client reports in them.

The caveat: Moz has progressively moved those metrics behind a login, and then behind subscription tiers. The store reviews are full of people who installed a “free DA checker” and immediately hit an auth wall, and the rating reflects that. It’s also on the heavier side, MozBar shows up regularly when people complain about extensions slowing their browser.

So: install it if you’re in the Moz ecosystem already. If you just want authority context while browsing, a free Ahrefs Webmaster Tools account plus the Ahrefs SEO Toolbar is the better 2026 setup, and that’s what I actually use for my own site’s checks.

Is SEO Minion Still Worth Paying For?

Honest answer: for most solo SEOs and bloggers, no. The free stack above covers everything Minion did.

Where paying makes sense is if you already want Keywords Everywhere for its search volume data. Then Minion comes along in the bundle, and for an agency workflow the combined price is fair. But if you’re only after the Minion features themselves, you’d be paying for a bundle you don’t need.

Which Ones Should You Actually Install?

Don’t install all seven. Extension hoarding slows your browser and you’ll end up using three of them anyway. My picks by situation:

The minimal daily stack (most people): Scoped SEO + Detailed + SERP Simulator. On-page checks, PAA research, and title previews. That’s 90% of what Minion did, free.

Local or international SEO: add SEO Search Simulator by Nightwatch.

Link building: add MozBar or the Ahrefs toolbar, whichever ecosystem you’re already in.
